Peru bans flights over Inca ruins

Dan Collyns, BBC News: The Peruvian government has reversed a decision to allow flights over the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu after an outcry from environmental groups.

Peru’s Transport and Communications ministry has declared the area around the site a no-fly zone.

Environmentalists said a number of rare animals and plants would have been severely affected by the low-flying helicopter tours.

Machu Picchu, a world heritage site, is Peru’s biggest tourist attraction. Read the rest of this entry »

LIMA, Peru — President Alan Garcia cut government salaries, including his own, on Monday, three days after announcing a long list of austerity measures in his inaugural address. Garcia, whose 1985-1990 government was plagued by mismanagement and corruption that left Peru nearly bankrupt, blasted outgoing President Alejandro Toledo for spending lavishly while failing to help Peru’s poor. A short walk in Cordillera Huayhuash, Peru..

A great trip! Short in this case means 10 days, 9 nights, excluding the nights at either end in the hotel in Huaraz. A short but succinct description of the place is given in the Moon handbook. This was a trip I was checking out for Peru Discover as well as for my own pleasure. The main problem setting it up was that there was no regular trip I could join in, and no friend could be tempted along, so I ended up doing it on my own, with own guide, ‘arriero’ and flock of ‘burros’ (donkeys). Trip around Peru….

This was my first trip to Peru, and I was very excited, and looking forward to seeing all of the wonderful sites and places that I read so much about. When we arrived in Lima we were met by our guide, who was there waiting for us. Our ride to our hotel (Los Delfines) was an ejoyable one, but I really did not have a chance to appreciate the city, since we arrived in Lima around 930pm, I did see lots and lots of casinos (tragaderos) along the way. (Angus Reid Global Scan) – Many adults in Peru’s capital believe a neighbouring nation is a rival, according to a poll by Apoyo published in El Comercio. 57 per cent of respondents in Lima consider Chile and Peru as natural enemies.
Peru claims to have lost access to fishing waters in the Pacific Ocean after an accord signed in the 1950s. In November 2005, the Peruvian Congress approved a law establishing the country’s maritime borders. Chile claims the proposed limits go beyond those defined by international treaties.
