The newest lodge in the Tortuguero National Park is the Hotel Manatus, located about 4½-5 hrs on bus then boat from San Jose.The lodge has only been operating for 3 months. The construction was finished back in June 2006, after about 1½  years of constructing and building, but is now  fully operational.


The lodge is located right across the Tortuguero Airstrip on the other side of the main canal, making it very conveniently for visitors who fly into or out of Tortuguero. Upon arriving at the lodge, you can see that they have a 2 story dock, the bottom part for receiving the clients, and the 2^nd floor to relax on a rocking chair and appreciate the surrounding view. All guests are welcomed with a delicious fruit cocktail, and damp face cloths to wash up a little bit after the bus & boat journey via Caño Blanco.

Some of the tours offered are visit to the Caribbean Conservation Center (C.C.C), and Tortuguero town, and of course the nocturnal turtle tour (when in season–Jul to Sept).

As mentioned before the hotel is very new, so everything was in very good condition. All of the walk ways connecting the rooms, restaurant & dock are roofed, so there is no problem with the hard rains. The property where the hotel sets is not a large property, but with enough space for 12 rooms (all have 2 double beds), all set up in groups of 3. The rooms are very nicely detailed all with A/C , cable TV (which no other hotel in Tortuguero offer), nice wooden floors, spacious tiled bathroom, all rooms also have  a front porch set up so that you don’t have a  view of your neighbor like other lodges, all rooms also have a rear private patio with an out side shower, for those who want to bathe with nature, this is something new in lodges for this region, and great for couples and small families.

I would highly recommend this lodge to persons wanting a more personalized service in a small & new lodge in Tortuguero.
